Helping people with diabetes feel less alone
At You're Just My Type, we are committed to prioritizing the mental health of individuals living with Type 1 diabetes. Our mission is to create safe and supportive spaces where the Type 1 community can connect, share their experiences, and find strength in knowing they are not alone. By addressing the emotional challenges of living with a chronic illness, we aim to reduce isolation, build resilience, and empower individuals to thrive. Through free events, advocacy, and a focus on mental well-being, we are redefining what it means to live fully with Type 1 diabetes.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, which means the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body's cells use glucose (sugar) for energy. Without insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream and can cause a range of health problems over time.
The exact cause of developing type 1 is not known, but both genetic and environmental factors are believed to play a role. People with type 1 diabetes must manually give themselves insulin through injections or an insulin pump, as well as closely monitor their blood sugars throughout the day. The condition is chronic, and at this time, there is no cure.
-
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes can include:
increased thirst and urination
hunger
weight loss
fatigue
blurred vision
frequent infections
-
Living with a chronic condition like type 1 diabetes can be challenging and isolating, and having a supportive community can provide a sense of connection and understanding. It can be helpful to talk to others who are going through similar experiences, share tips and strategies for managing the condition, and receive emotional support.
-
People with type 1 diabetes are at an increased risk for mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, diabetes distress, and eating disorders.
In fact, studies show people with diabetes are 2 to 3 times more likely to have depression than people without diabetes.
Our goal is to provide community, support, and helpful resources in hopes that people with type 1 diabetes feel less alone.
